ddr design: foldable tumbler

Leipzig

This is a tumbler I got as a present from my friend Miriam Hartwig last week. We spend 10 days in Leipizg, East Germany to work on a project for the Designers Open.

The plastic cup comes in a case with a mirror – don’t know why, maybe you people used it as a spy device?

In order to use the cup, you need to turn around the upper part and put it down on the table.

Now you can ‘build’ the cup by pulling apart the rings. Amazing, how tricky East Germany design can be…

Finally you can enjoy your tea in your ‘almost indestructible’ DDR cup which was designed in 1964. One of the places where you can buy the ‘Klappbecher’ online is here.
