one of the mayor design websites in the netherlands published a video overview about dutch design from milan design week. some of the interviews like the one with richard hutten or pieke bergmans, are done by me. sometimes you just hear my laugh but can’t see its me.

dutch food designer franke elshout was responsible for the catering at the opening of the ‘nl=new luxury’ exhibition at the nai. just as museums store insects and artifacts in thin draws, franke uses a similar method to display her food creations.

nai maastricht: ‘luxury design’

the nai opened a show called ‘nl=new luxury’ yesterday. the new luxury is attention to the craftsmanship and to the material a product is made off.
marcia nolte – investigation how a human body could adjust itself to the design of products
cygalle shapiro – put a sheet of paper between the large serving platters and you got new plates
lianne kuijpers – wall covering inspired by the appearance of the human body translated into rubber
sayaka yamamoto – carpet inspired by the human skin
celestine briet – birdhouses made of pressed leaves
hung-pin hsueh – system for using taiwan cypress driftwood as an architectural building material
nai maastricht: a new vision of luxury

on this sunny day I went to the nai, netherlands architecture institute, in maastricht for the opening of the ‘nl=new luxury’ exhibition. the show is curated by alexander van slobbe, fashion designer and creative director of the design academy eindhoven. since april 1st 2009 the nai operates independently as the naim/bureau europa, an organisation for architecture and design.

I have to admit that the video embodies amateurism. we did the video on the spur of the moment. 3 takes and the 3rd one was chosen. but I said what I think and have finally an ‘ABOUT’. I like it that way.

ilona huvenaars + willem derks presented ‘knitted vase’, a rapid manufactured vase that ‘adapt to the single beautiful rose or the bunch of wildflowers instead of the other way around’.
